Winter clothing in Saariselkä: what to wear at −30°C and where to rent
Updated October 29, 2026 · 3 min read
If your wardrobe stops at a city coat and trainers, rent the outer layer in Saariselkä and pack only wool underneath. From December to February the village averages −9.7 °C to −12.1 °C, and each of those months has recorded lows beyond −30 °C. The simplest booking is the Insulated, Waterproof Winter Clothing Set Rental, from €46 with 4.8 stars from 22 reviews, offered for adults and kids staying in Saariselkä or Ivalo. Its short description lists neither the garments nor how many days that price covers, so confirm both while booking. No other Saariselkä tour we list mentions clothing in its description.
How cold it gets, month by month
Finnish Meteorological Institute averages for 1991–2020, Saariselkä village station:
| Month | Average | Average daily low | Days with a low below −10 °C |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | −6.7 °C | −9.5 °C | 13 |
| December | −9.7 °C | −13.0 °C | 18 |
| January | −12.1 °C | −15.6 °C | 23 |
| February | −12.0 °C | −15.3 °C | 20 |
| March | −7.7 °C | −11.7 °C | 17 |
| April | −2.1 °C | −6.0 °C | 7 |
The average January daily high is only −8.3 °C. Snow averages 55 cm deep in mid-January and 77 cm in mid-March, so boots matter as much as the jacket. Ivalo airport, lower than the village, has measured −48.9 °C.

“Not mentioned” is not “not provided”. Visit Finland says guided winter safaris in Lapland usually bundle clothing, and Safartica (office at Lutontie 16) includes thermal overall, boots, woollen socks, gloves and scarf on its safaris. Only each operator can confirm its own tour.
What to bring even if you rent
Visit Finland recommends long underwear in merino wool or a moisture-wicking technical fabric, then a mid layer matched to activity: thinner for snowshoeing, thicker for slow outings. Choose loose pieces, since tight layers trap less air. Bring your own hat and wool socks.
Who should rent, and who should not
Rent if you own no insulated trousers or snow boots, if children have outgrown their gear, or if you plan walks between tours. Skip it if you already ski in proper outerwear, or if every booked outing supplies an overall.
Between 16 November and 5 January, Safartica rents no clothing on its own, so a safari company’s spare gear is no fallback then. The downside of any rental is fit. Winterent exchanges sizes for free, so try everything on at pickup.
Our recommendation
Book the Insulated, Waterproof Winter Clothing Set Rental for your whole stay if you lack winter trousers and snow boots, and add your own merino, hat and socks. If your programme is a few safaris that each confirm an overall, keep the money and pack the wool.
