Snowmobile safari in Saariselkä: licence, cost and which tour?

Updated October 29, 2026 · 4 min read

Two snowmobiles crossing an open snowy fell beneath a pale sky

With a car licence you may drive a snowmobile in Finland. The law sets the minimum driving age at 15 and requires a category T licence on official snowmobile routes, and a car licence includes it. Guided rides from Saariselkä start at €94 for one hour; the full-day adventure costs €239. We would book the Snowmobile Safari on Tundra: 3.5 hours through Arctic forest and gentle fells for €179.10, rated 4.8 from 223 reviews. It is cheaper than the northern lights ride and just as good under a cloudy sky.

Who may drive

These rules come from Traficom, the Finnish transport agency. On official routes and at road crossings the driver needs a category T licence, and a car (B) licence covers every vehicle a T licence allows. EU and EEA licences are valid in Finland. Visitors may also drive on a valid licence from a country that signed the Geneva or Vienna road traffic convention; if it does not clearly show its categories and validity, carry an international driving permit or an official translation. Helmets are compulsory for driver and passenger, traffic on routes keeps right and the drink-driving limit is 0.5 per mille.

Operators can set a higher age than the law. An overnight safari sold by Visit Inari, for example, takes drivers only from 18. The Saariselkä listings below give no driver age, so if a teenager hopes to drive, confirm it when you book.

Sharing a snowmobile

The law allows one passenger, and only on a machine with a passenger seat and footrests. The rear seat is the colder one, because the passenger sits still while the driver steers. Passengers in a towed sled limit the speed to 40 km/h instead of 60 km/h. The listings below do not say whether the from-price is for a shared machine or one to yourself, so check when booking.

Cold, light and season

The municipality of Inari, to which Saariselkä belongs, gives a daily average of −12 °C for January and February and warns of readings below −30 °C. The airstream makes that feel harsher on face, thumbs and knees. Around midwinter there is only twilight, so evening tours run in full darkness.

The listings give no operating dates. Comparable snowmobile safaris that Visit Finland lists in Rovaniemi and Ruka run from November or December to April, so a November date is the one to confirm.

Who it suits, and the catches

It suits anyone who wants to steer rather than sit and reach fells beyond walking distance. A shared machine suits couples less if one of you feels the cold badly, and anyone seeking silence should pick a reindeer sleigh or snowshoes: a snowmobile is loud.

The catches: the one-hour safari rests on only seven reviews. The aurora ride costs more and spends four hours in the dark, lights or not. Six hours at −12 °C is a long day for a beginner.

Our recommendation

Book the Snowmobile Safari on Tundra. Among the snowmobile tours with more than 200 reviews it has the best rating, and its value does not hinge on the sky. On a tighter budget, the Snowmobile Ride with Hot Drinks gives you two hours for €133. If seeing the aurora matters more than the scenery, take Hunting Northern Lights by Snowmobiles early in your stay.
